Buying a used marquee: the second-hand and ex-hire guide

Used aluminium marquee frame under structural inspection

A used or ex-hire marquee is the fastest and most economical path to covered space — smaller assessed structures can be standing within 48 hours of approval and payment — provided the frame passes structural assessment. The risk sits in what you cannot see: impact damage, worn connections, tired membranes and missing engineering documentation. Buy assessed, or don't buy.

PCS sits on both sides of this market: we supply quality used marquees where a client's timeline demands speed, and we assess structures for owners who are relocating or buying privately. That gives us an unusual freedom — we can tell you honestly when used is the smart move, and when it's a false economy.

Why buy used?

  • Speed. The structure already exists. No manufacturing, no international freight — the two things that dominate a new structure's lead time. Smaller assessed structures from PCS stock can deploy within 48 hours of approval and payment.
  • Price. Meaningfully below new, for a frame engineered to serve decades.
  • Proven stock. A structure that has stood through wind seasons has demonstrated exactly what the engineering says it should do.

The risks nobody photographs

  • Frame damage and corrosion. Forklift strikes, dissimilar-metal corrosion and elongated pin holes compromise load paths invisibly — a frame can look straight and be structurally spent.
  • Worn connections and hardware. Plates, pins and tensioning gear wear faster than frames; on ex-hire stock they have been assembled and broken down dozens of times.
  • Membrane life. PVC roofs are consumables on a 15–25 year clock. A bargain marquee with two seasons of membrane left is not a bargain.
  • Missing documentation. Without engineering drawings and specifications, certifying the structure for your site and use becomes difficult — sometimes decisively so. See how approvals work.
  • Wrong wind rating. A structure engineered for a sheltered showground may not certify on your coastal site. The rating must match where the marquee is going, not where it has been.

The inspection checklist

CheckWhat good looks like
Frame extrusionsStraight, undented, no corrosion bloom at joints or ground contact
Connection holes & pinsRound holes, snug pins — elongation means worn load paths
Base plates & anchorsFlat, crack-free, full hardware set
MembranesTranslucent and supple, not chalky, brittle or patched at stress points
DocumentationEngineering drawings, specifications, wind rating — non-negotiable for certification
CompletenessEvery bay's components present; missing parts of discontinued systems can be unobtainable

Used or new? Match it to the timeline

The honest framework: used wins on speed and price; new wins on specification and service life. An urgent storage problem, an emergency, a season about to start — assessed used stock is the right answer, standing in days. A permanent venue, a large clear-span facility, a premium fit-out — a new European-engineered system repays the months it takes to arrive. Many clients do both: used cover now, new structure ordered for the long term.

How PCS de-risks used

Every used marquee PCS supplies is structurally assessed and documented — the same discipline we apply to removals and relocations — and certified for your site and use, not sold as-is off a truck. Buying privately instead? We can inspect the structure before you commit, so you negotiate on evidence rather than appearance.
